Galena, Illinois may be the Midwest’s most-loved, charming town! Galena offers an extensive, historic shopping district, multiple resorts, restaurants, and picturesque views in Northern Illinois. Located about 60 miles west of Rockford, Illinois, this town sits on the Mississippi River.
Galena offers multiple bed and breakfasts and resorts for overnight accommodations, but we LOVED staying at the home rental called The Hideaway by Galena Haven Vacation Homes. The home included everything for baby (pack’n’play, baby bathtub, high chair, toys), young kids (there’s a toy closet and books!), older kids (laser tag, a hidden door), and teens (ping pong, pool, hot tub). The house comes with The Owners Club access, where you can take the family to a private indoor swimming pool, indoor basketball court, and even to the indoor toddler play area. In the summer time, the Owner’s Club also has an outdoor pool and splash pad.
The Hideaway is situated in the woods with an outdoor fire pit and hot tub. We were able to park our mid-sized SUV in the garage during our stay. The basement also has a secret room behind the pool table supplies!

This rental home is large enough to accommodate grandma and grandpa, or other friends or family. The house is perfect for about 10 people.

Downtown Galena has a few fun stores for kids, too; we recommend visiting Poopsies, a unique a fun toy store with almost every toy having an “example” on display (meant to be played with!). Momerella is another sweet store with high- quality young children’s clothing and toys, maternity clothing, and holistic skincare. If you’re looking for a bite to eat downtown, we recommend Charlie’s. Other eateries often aren’t open until dinner. Galena Roaster’s is a downtown coffee shop with in-house roasted beans (excellent espresso!), which is the perfect spot for grabbing a latte. Downtown also hosts multiple candy and chocolate stores.

A few notes:
Galena is not stroller friendly (lots of stairs/narrow aisles inside shops), so we recommend baby-wearing, or small strollers that can be easily folded/carried. Kids will love coming, but everything is narrow, and most shops have a step up into the store.
Chestnut Mountain Resort offers winter sports and an Alpine slide in the Summer
Chestnut Mountain also has a wonderful restaurant inside the Lodge
Galena Haven Homes offers multiple home rental properties; the Hideaway is the most kid- friendly (pet friendly, too!)
