This Free day trip in Illinois is a wonderful, fun, and educational opportunity for kids and adults! De Immigrant is a working windmill, built in 2001 by Dutch workers who came to the US to build this specific mill. Multiple types of grain are milled and available for purchase. Mill tours are free, and across the street is a museum and visitor center (with spaces for educational groups), which is also free. The mill is situated along the Mississippi River and includes a bike path (you could easily bring bikes or go on a walk here!) along the river route.
Two entrances to the mill are available: the upper level and the lower level. Stairs are inside the mill, however stroller access to go in between levels is only available outside the mill via ramp.
Nearby is a brand- new park (a family could spend two hours here! Located down the street on 10th street). This would be the perfect place to bring snacks.
The museum and visitors center offers Dutch imports for purchase, as well as flour from the mill.
A few restaurant recommendations in Fulton: Krumpets (they close early!), or Steam and Anchor Coffee (soup, snacks available here as well).
Cost: Free
plan ahead: call a few days before going to assure the windmill is open on the date you plan to arrive. Check the weather and we hope you plan to visit the new park!
Good for ages: all ages! The museum has small toys and a play space indoors (educational center).
