Espresso, Play Space Library, Ice Cream, and Old fashioned Candy shop at one stop in Rockton, Illinois

Updated: Apr 14

If you are looking to park in one location (who wants to get in -and out- of the car multiple times with toddlers and a baby? not me!), then go to Rockton, Illinois. We recommend parking downtown (no parking fees), walking to La Croute (Espresso and award-winning homemade baked goods), heading to the beautiful Talcott Free Library (a few doors down), stopping into Taylor & Max (Boutique children's clothing and toys) then finishing the day at Dairy Haus (locally made ice cream) or Sugar Britches Old fashioned Candy Store. Every storefront is located in the same block. We braved the adventure in winter, and since everything is so close together, did not mind the weather at all!

Our focus in this article is going to be La Croute and the Talcott Free Library- the main reason for our excursion with kids. Anna, owner at La Croute, opened her bakery after spending time in New York and California perfecting her process. She offers homemade, real-ingredient, and wholesome baked goods like sourdough, scones, and even lunch items (pepperoni and mozzarella stuffed rolls). La Croute also offers cake orders and espresso drinks (very well done espresso drinks!).

A few doors down and across the street is the Talcott Free library. Inside, it seems like the library is mostly catered to children (we were thrilled!), while offering plenty of quiet spaces for adults to work. The back corner of the library offers a playroom with baskets of toys, couches, and a child-sized table. Just outside of the playroom is a craft corner with craft supplies and a table for slightly-older kids. Near the front desk are two more great spots: another craft table with a seasonal craft available for kids, and a seed library (new!). Seeds can be taken by the public- and includes mostly vegetables.

Next to the library is Dairy Haus, a local ice cream spot that is VERY popular and delicious! Across the street (kiddy-corner) from the library is Taylor and Max, offering many children's brands that are very luxurious (and mainly sold in stores in New York and LA). Across from La Croute is Sugar Britches Old-fashioned candy store- you can buy bulk candy or house-made favorites). Also along this block is a consignment shop that someone in your group may enjoy!

  • Stroller friendly? Yes!

  • How much time would a two year old last? as long or as little as their nap schedule allows!

  • Is food available? Yes -La Croute

Across the street and behind the Talcott Free Library is a community pool and park available in warmer months.
